GEO Optimisation Results

Real outcomes from AI visibility and generative engine optimisation campaigns.

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of making your content more likely to be cited by AI answer engines. I have been building and testing GEO strategies since early 2023. Here are documented results from those experiments.

What GEO Results Look Like

Unlike traditional SEO where you can track position 1 to 10 rankings, GEO results show up differently. Your brand name appears in AI-generated answers. You start receiving referral traffic from Perplexity.ai. Users tell you they found you through a ChatGPT or Bing Copilot recommendation.

For my own site and for client sites, I track GEO results by regularly querying AI systems with relevant searches and documenting when and how our content appears. I also monitor referral traffic from AI platforms in Google Analytics.

GEO for a Professional Services Brand

One client in the UAE consulting space invested in a GEO strategy in late 2023. Within six months, their brand was being cited in Perplexity answers for 12 different queries in their domain. This drove a measurable increase in branded search volume - more people searching specifically for their brand name because they had seen it cited in AI answers.

The compounding effect: AI citation drives branded search, branded search strengthens topical authority signals, stronger topical authority drives more AI citation. The loop compounds over time.

GEO for Africa and Emerging Markets

I have also tested GEO strategies specifically for African market visibility. For Cameroon, Nigeria, and Ghana-related queries, the AI citation landscape is far less competitive than for Dubai or UAE queries. A well-structured entity with proper schema markup can achieve AI citations for African market queries much faster than for developed market queries.

This is a significant opportunity for African brands and for UAE businesses targeting African markets. The window of low competition will not last.

Frequently Asked

How do I measure if my GEO strategy is working?

Track referral traffic from Perplexity and other AI platforms in Google Analytics, monitor branded search volume trends in Google Search Console, and regularly test AI systems with queries in your domain.

Does GEO replace traditional SEO?

No. GEO and SEO are complementary. The content and authority signals that drive AI citations overlap heavily with those that drive organic rankings. Build both simultaneously.

Which AI platform is most important to optimise for?

Currently Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Bing Copilot collectively drive the most measurable referral traffic. ChatGPT drives brand awareness but less direct measurable traffic.
