AI SEO
AI SEO, GEO, AEO and LLMO: what is the difference?
By Lopty Pascal · Last reviewed
They are four names for largely the same work: making a brand visible in answers written by AI. GEO means generative engine optimization. AEO means answer engine optimization. LLMO means large language model optimization. AI SEO is the broad everyday term. The differences are of emphasis, not of method.
If a provider insists these are four separate services to buy, be cautious.
What each term emphasises
- AI SEO: search optimization that accounts for AI features, especially inside search engines such as Google AI Overviews.
- GEO: being cited by generative assistants. The term comes from a 2023 research paper of that name.
- AEO: giving direct answers. The older term, from the era of featured snippets and voice assistants.
- LLMO: influencing what language models know and say about a brand, including through their training data.
What they share
- Pages that crawlers can read.
- Content that answers a question directly and can be quoted.
- A clear, consistent identity for the brand or person.
- Independent sources that mention and describe you.
- Measurement by presence across many questions.
Which term I use
I say AI SEO and GEO together, because buyers search for both and the work is one job. I do not sell them separately. My service page covers both.
What Google says
Google’s position is that its AI features need no special optimization beyond normal good practice for Search. That is a useful anchor when a new acronym appears: ask what work it describes that is not already covered by a readable site, helpful content and a trusted brand. Usually the honest answer is the off-site and entity work, which is real, and which every one of these labels includes.
What this will not do
- Learning the vocabulary will not improve your visibility. The work does.
- There is no certification or official standard behind any of these terms.
- New labels will keep appearing. Judge them by the tasks they describe.
Frequently asked questions
- Is GEO the same as AI SEO?
- Nearly. GEO focuses on generative assistants; AI SEO is the wider term that also covers AI features in search engines. The work overlaps almost completely.
- Is AEO outdated?
- The term is older, but the idea, answering the question directly, is central to all of this work.
- Which should I ask a consultant for?
- Describe the outcome instead: you want your brand found and accurately described in AI answers and in search. A good consultant will not need the acronym.
