Does llms.txt help you appear in AI answers?

By Lopty Pascal · Last reviewed

llms.txt is a plain text file at the root of a website that summarises who you are and points to your most important pages, written for language models to read. It is a proposal, not a standard that AI providers have agreed to follow. It costs almost nothing to add, so I add it, but I do not expect it to change recommendations.

Think of it as a tidy introduction that some tools may read, not as a ranking factor.

What it is

The idea was published in September 2024 by Jeremy Howard at llmstxt.org. The file is written in Markdown: a title, a short summary, and lists of links with one-line descriptions. The aim is to give a model a clean, short version of a site that fits easily into its context, without menus, scripts and layout.

What it does not do

  • It does not control crawling. That is the job of robots.txt.
  • It does not replace a sitemap. Search engines use sitemap.xml to discover pages.
  • It is not confirmed as an input to any major assistant’s recommendations. I have not seen a provider state that it is.
  • It does not fix pages that are thin, unclear or unreadable.

Why I still add one

My opinion: it is cheap, harmless and occasionally useful. Developers and some agent tools do fetch it. Writing it also forces a useful exercise, which is stating in five lines who you are, what you do and which pages matter. If you cannot write that summary, the site has a clarity problem that no file will solve.

How to write a good one

  • Start with your name and a one-paragraph description that matches your home page and profiles word for word.
  • List only the pages you want read: services, about, key guides, contact.
  • Give each link a plain description of what the page answers.
  • Generate the file at build time from the same data as your pages so it never goes out of date.
  • Leave out claims you would not make on the site itself.

What this will not do

  • It will not get you recommended.
  • It will not hide or protect content. Anything listed is public.
  • It will not help if it contradicts what your pages and profiles say.

Frequently asked questions

Is llms.txt an official standard?
No. It is a community proposal. Adoption by AI providers is not confirmed, so treat it as optional.
Should I block AI crawlers in llms.txt?
No. Access rules belong in robots.txt. llms.txt is only a summary.
Does this site have one?
Yes, at /llms.txt. It is generated from the same content as the pages, so it always matches them.
