How should I write a page so AI can cite it?
By Lopty Pascal · Last reviewed
Answer the question in the first two or three sentences, in words that still make sense if lifted out of the page. Then support the answer with specifics: steps, conditions, numbers with sources, and what does not apply. Write one page per question, and say who wrote it and when it was checked.
This is the structure of every page on this site, including this one.
Why this structure works
An assistant assembles an answer from short passages. A passage that states a complete fact is easy to use. A passage that begins "As we discussed above" or builds up to its point over four paragraphs is not. The 2023 GEO research paper found that adding citations, quotations and statistics improved how visible a source was in generated answers in their tests, while keyword stuffing did not.
A page template
- Title: the question as a person would ask it.
- First paragraph: the direct answer.
- Who it applies to and who it does not.
- The steps, requirements or reasoning, as short sections with plain headings.
- What this will not do, or where the answer changes.
- A few real follow-up questions with short answers.
- Sources for outside facts, author name, date last reviewed.
Sentence-level habits
- Name the subject in each key sentence instead of "it" or "this".
- Put the number and its source in the same sentence.
- Define a term the first time you use it.
- Prefer a list when the content is a list.
- Cut introductions that restate the title.
What makes a page worth citing at all
Structure helps an assistant use your page. It does not give it a reason to choose yours over ten others. That comes from saying something the others do not: a real example, a figure from your own work, a clear opinion, a limit most people leave out. Google describes the same thing as original information and first-hand experience.
What this will not do
- Good structure will not rescue a page with nothing original in it.
- It does not mean writing for machines. A clear answer first is better for people too.
- It will not help to split one topic into many thin pages.
Frequently asked questions
- How long should a page be for AI to cite it?
- As long as the question needs. Many good answers fit in a few hundred words. Length is not what gets a page cited.
- Should I add an FAQ to every page?
- Add real follow-up questions where they exist. Invented questions that repeat the main text add nothing.
- Can I use AI to write these pages?
- For structure and editing, yes. The facts, examples and judgment must come from someone who can stand behind them.
