How do I track traffic and leads from ChatGPT and Perplexity?
By Lopty Pascal · Last reviewed
You can track the visits that arrive by a clicked link, because they carry a referrer from the assistant. You cannot directly track people who read your name in an answer and came to you later by searching or typing your address. So measure both: referral visits in analytics, and a simple "how did you hear about us" question on every enquiry.
Between them these two cover most of what is knowable.
What shows up in analytics
From what I see in client accounts: visits from assistants appear with referrers such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Links from ChatGPT commonly carry a utm_source of chatgpt.com as well. Create a channel group or a saved filter for these sources so they are reported together instead of being scattered through "referral".
What does not show up
- Mentions with no link, which are common.
- People who see your name, then search it on Google. That arrives as branded organic search.
- Clicks from apps that strip the referrer. Those land in "direct".
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks, which Search Console counts within normal web search.
A setup that captures most of it
- An "AI assistants" channel in analytics, built from the referrers above.
- Conversions defined for forms, calls and WhatsApp clicks, so AI visits can be tied to enquiries.
- A required "how did you hear about us" field with "ChatGPT or another AI assistant" as an option.
- The same question asked by whoever answers the phone or WhatsApp.
- A monthly look at branded search volume in Search Console. Growth there often follows AI mentions.
- The weekly question table, to see mentions that never produce a click.
How to read the numbers
Expect AI referral traffic to be small compared with search, and to convert well, because the visitor arrives already advised. Judge the channel on enquiries and on the trend, not on visit counts. And treat self-reported answers as a floor: many people forget where they first heard of you.
What this will not do
- No setup gives a complete count of AI-influenced customers.
- Referrer names change as products change. Review the list every few months.
- Tracking does not create visibility. It tells you whether your work is producing any.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Google Analytics show ChatGPT traffic?
- Yes, as referral traffic from chatgpt.com when a user clicks a link, provided the referrer is passed.
- Can I see AI Overview clicks in Search Console?
- They are included in the Performance report totals for web search and are not broken out separately.
- Why is my direct traffic rising?
- One possible cause is people arriving from AI apps that do not pass a referrer. Check whether it rises alongside AI referrals and branded search.
