Do reviews affect whether AI recommends a business?
By Lopty Pascal · Last reviewed
Yes, in my experience they are one of the strongest inputs for local and service businesses. When an assistant compares providers it summarises what customers say, and it needs enough recent, detailed reviews on independent platforms to do that. Reviews hosted only on your own website carry little weight.
The useful question is not how many stars you have but whether there is enough written detail for an assistant to say why someone should choose you.
Which reviews count
- Reviews on independent platforms: Google Business Profile and the review sites for your sector.
- Recent ones. A strong record that stopped two years ago reads as a business that may have changed.
- Detailed ones. "Great service" gives an assistant nothing. A review that names the service, the problem and the result gives it a reason.
- Reviews you have replied to, especially complaints handled well.
What does not help
- Testimonials on your own site with no way to verify them.
- Star-rating markup for reviews you host about yourself. Google treats these as self-serving and does not show stars for them.
- Bought or exchanged reviews. They breach platform rules and can be removed in bulk, taking real ones with them.
- A burst of reviews in one week followed by silence.
How to build reviews honestly
- Ask every client at the same point, when the work has just been delivered.
- Send a direct link so it takes one minute.
- Suggest what to mention: what they needed, what you did, what changed.
- Never offer payment or discounts in return.
- Reply to every review, briefly and personally.
Why detail matters to an assistant
My observation: an assistant asked for "a good dentist for nervous patients" looks for those words in what people have written. A clinic with thirty reviews mentioning patience with anxious patients is easier to name than one with three hundred that only say "five stars".
What this will not do
- Reviews cannot hide real service problems. They reveal them.
- You cannot remove a genuine negative review. You can answer it well.
- Reviews alone are not enough if assistants cannot read your site or identify you.
Frequently asked questions
- How many reviews do I need for AI to recommend me?
- There is no published number. Aim for a steady flow of detailed, recent reviews rather than a target total.
- Do Google reviews matter for ChatGPT?
- In my experience assistants draw on map and review data when answering local questions, though each product uses its own sources.
- Can I reply to reviews using AI?
- You can draft with it, but replies should be specific and true to what happened. Generic replies add nothing.
