Why AI recommends a competitor and not your business
By Lopty Pascal · Last reviewed
A client came to me frustrated about exactly this. He was the more established business. The search engine was ranking him above his competitor, but ChatGPT and Perplexity kept recommending the competitor by name. The usual reason is that the assistant found more, clearer or more independent information about the other firm. Assistants often show their sources, so it is possible to see what worked for the competitor and close the gap deliberately.
Treat it as research, not as a ranking to beat.
How to run the comparison
- List ten questions a buyer would ask that should lead to you.
- Ask each on two or three assistants. Record who is named and which sources are cited.
- Open every cited source. Note what kind it is: a list article, a directory, a review site, a forum thread, the competitor’s own page.
- Count how often each source type appears. That is your map of what the assistants trust for your category.
What you usually find
- The competitor is in "best of" or comparison articles and you are not.
- They have many recent reviews on a platform you have neglected.
- Their site answers the buyer’s question directly on one page.
- They are discussed in a community where your buyers ask for recommendations.
- Their description is the same everywhere, so it gets repeated.
What to do about each
- List articles: contact the author with a factual reason to include you. Do not pay for placement that is not disclosed.
- Reviews: ask real clients, steadily, on the platform that is being cited.
- Direct answers: write the page that answers the question better.
- Communities: take part usefully under your own name.
- Consistency: fix your descriptions. See what entity SEO is.
What not to copy
Sometimes a competitor is visible through tactics that will not last: fake reviews, networks of self-published "top ten" pages, or mass-produced content. Google’s spam policies cover these. Copying them ties your brand to the same risk.
What this will not do
- It will not displace a competitor who is simply better known and better reviewed. That takes time and real work.
- I will not write anything negative about a competitor.
- Assistants rotate names. Expect to share the answer, not own it.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I see which sources ChatGPT used?
- When it searches the web it usually shows citations. Perplexity shows them for nearly every answer. Use those lists as your research base.
- Should I publish my own "best companies" list with me at the top?
- Readers and assistants can tell a self-serving list. A fair comparison that includes real alternatives is more credible and safer.
- How long does it take to appear alongside a competitor?
- It depends on the gap in independent mentions and reviews. Narrow questions come first, broad ones later.
