Ranking on Google but not mentioned by ChatGPT: why it happens

This is one of the most common situations clients bring to me. The client came with a business that was doing well in search. The search engine was showing his pages near the top and sending visitors, but when buyers asked ChatGPT who to hire, his name was not there. The reason is that ranking and being recommended are decided differently. Google ranks pages for a query. An assistant chooses a few brands to name and wants to be able to justify each one.

A business can hold a good position and still be left out if AI crawlers cannot read the site, if nothing independent mentions it, or if its pages never state plainly what it is. There are five usual causes. I check them in this order, because the early ones are quick to fix.

Cause 1: the assistant’s crawler cannot read the page

Google can render JavaScript. Most AI crawlers do not. A site that ranks through Google’s rendering can be blank to GPTBot or PerplexityBot. A firewall or bot-protection rule can also block them while letting Googlebot through. Test with the method on this page.

Cause 2: the rankings are for the wrong kind of query

Ranking for an informational article does not make a business a candidate when someone asks "who should I hire". For that, the assistant retrieves lists, comparisons, directories and reviews. If the client appears in none of them, the article ranking does not help.

Cause 3: the page does not say what the business is

Many service pages open with a slogan. An assistant needs a sentence it can lift: who you are, what you do, where, for whom. If that sentence is missing, it describes a competitor who supplied one.

Cause 4: nobody else mentions the business

This is the most common cause and the slowest to fix. Assistants give weight to independent sources. A business known only through its own website looks unverified.

Cause 5: the identity is inconsistent

Different names, descriptions or locations across your profiles make the assistant unsure which entity you are. See what entity SEO is.

What this will not do

Fixing all five does not make a mention certain. It removes the reasons you are being skipped.
A single test proves little. Check a set of questions over several weeks.
Higher Google rankings alone will not close this gap.
